About Molly Mathias
I create abstract paintings using acrylic, watercolor, oil pastel, charcoal, and other mixed drawing materials. My work is rooted in color—its intensity, variety, and ability to shift mood. Color is how I connect to the world around me, whether through nature, interiors, or everyday objects, and it is always the starting point for my paintings.
My process is intuitive and exploratory. I rarely begin with a set composition or palette; instead, I build in layers, often painting over a piece multiple times. I work with brushes, sponges, palette knives, spray bottles, water, and anything else that allows me to push, drag, or draw through paint. Shapes and marks emerge and repeat, sometimes comfortably, sometimes uneasily, as I push myself to discover new visual rhythms.
For me, painting is less about producing a finished object and more about the act of creating itself—a way to empty the mind and move through sensation. I hope my work offers viewers that same pause: a chance to step outside themselves, get lost in color, and experience a moment of relief or meditation.
